Paper Napkins Collage

I have a thing for paper napkins. I don't know how many packages of napkins I have, but every time I'm in a gift store, target, wallmart, home goods or similar store, I buy napkins. There are so many pretty designs!!! So I was really excited when I came across this tut from Roni http://inkstainswithroni.blogspot.com/2010/07/layered-napkin-collage.html. Go check out her blog. She has a lot more ways to use your napkins. I immediately wanted to try this, and I thought it would be cool to make my own background paper with this technique. So all the credit for this technique goes to Roni, but I wanted to share with you the steps I took to make my LO.

Here are some of the many napkins I have

I started by glueing some book and music paper on a piece of cardstock

Then I added pieces of the paper napkins (only the top layer)

This is the finished background

If you want to tone down the colors, you can add a white wash. Here you can see the difference.

and/or you can add some beeswax and perfect pearls

The Red Baron

As some of you might know my hubby is an avid pilot. He loves anything that flies! His nickname here in Texas is "The Red Baron", I don't know why, but everythime somebody hears him on the radio when flying, they say "hey, that's the red baron!" Of course, it is easy to recognize him, because of his "funny accent" LOL (english is not our native language). For this LO I combined some dictionary paper, masks, ephemera, stamps and some cut-outs of Webster's Pages paper. It is a bit different than my usual layouts, so I would love to hear what you think.

Altered Bird

I have this bird already since the Timster cruise last year, so I thought that it was about time to do something with it. I first glued some dictionary paper on the bird with Modpodge, then I painted it with blue metallic paint. When it was dry I dipped my finger in some gold rub 'n buff and lightly rubbed over the blue paint. I embellished the bird with cheese cloth, lace, watchparts, some Tim idea-ology and Vintaj charms. The stand I painted first with brown paint, then white paint, then sanded it and again rubbed some gold rub 'n buff on it.

SGC July - I'm a Littlebit Vintage

Here is my entry for Robin Shakoor's "I'm a Littlebit Vintage" challenge for the Swirly Girls Club over @ Swirlydoos. The challenge is to use a photo of yourself as a baby or little girl and to tell some things that people have said about you when you were growing up. I can't remember anything specific that people said about ME when I was little. People always talked and asked about my sister (They still do! LOL). She was a real cutie when she was little, and she still is more extravert and easier to talk to than I am. I am more the quite type, not so outspoken. I was/am the typical "big" sister, looking out for her, my family, my friends. I do remember that my mom told me that I was an easy baby and todler. Never cried much, and when she would put me down somewhere with some toys, I would happily play and stay at the same spot where she left me. And that is what I still do. Put me in my scraproom and I will stay there for hours !!! Totally happy, and no desire to do something else or go anywhere else.

For this LO I used primarily fabrics and only very little paper. The big flower is (of cours) made with Tim's tattered florals die.

Metal Frame

Hi y'all,
Today I had so much fun. I made this frame from all of the little scraps of metal I kept in a box. I always feel good when I'm using my scraps. I saw this idea at the Great American Scrapbook Convention in Arlington last month and it was made by Cheryl Darrow of Ten Seconds Studio. So I can't take credit for the design. The technique is also explained in one of her Taco Tuesday videos. If you're interested, here is the link: http://www.tensecondsstudio.com/videos/062210.html . What is my idea is to color and stamp the magnetic board inside the frame. I first colored the board with alcohol inks and then stamped with Stazon ink. Normally I don't work with very bright colors, but I love how this turned out.

Canvas with Squares

Inspired by the beautiful artwork of Audrey Underwood and the gorgeous papers and chipboard shapes of Collections I created this 20" x 10" Canvas. I first decorated the inchies, twinchies and trinchies with scraps of paper. Then I painted and sanded the various chipboard shapes and added some lace, cheesecloth, german scraps and metal embellishments. I had a blast during this whole process, and I'm already thinking about the next project :o) !

French Marketplace Album

This weekend I had the pleasure of working with Carol Wingert's new heirloom kit French Marketplace. http://www.carolwingert.typepad.com/creatologie/ This was the second heirloom kit I bought from her and WOW what a treat this was. (Here is a link to the first heirloom kit I got from her http://labonita-bonnie.blogspot.com/2010/04/canvas-album.html) Carol is soooo talented and her designs are stunning, and then the fabrics and other embellishments she selected for this album... she really has an eye for vintage beauty. When I opened my box, I was so overwhelmed by the gorgeousness inside, I could only sit down, touch and caress everything and SMILE!

Anyway, although it is not my design and I only followed Carol's clear and very details instructions that come with the kit, I still want to show of the end product, because I'm so very pleased with it. I still have to find the right photo's to fill it with, but here it is (drumroll) .... The French Marketplace Album

I had so much fun assembling this album and it really inspired me and made me want to hunt for more beautiful vintage fabrics, laces and other vintage embellishment. (as if I need more junk in my scrap room :o) !!!)

Swirlydoos July Kit - Summer Serenity

YAY, it is reveal day again at Swirlydoos!!!! Although the website is still being rebuild, the kit, add-on kits and the DT layouts are posted on the Swirlydoos blog http://www.swirlydoos.blogspot.com/ . The Swirlydoos July kit - Summer Serenity features the beautiful Basic Grey Capella papers and lots and lots of gorgeous embellies.

The LO is based on a sketch of the very talented Beggahuna. The photo shows my Mom when she was 18 years old. The chipboard vine is from Dusty Attic.

This LO is a lift of GabrielleP's Style Baby LO. Here is the link to the gorgeous original http://www.scrapbook.com/galleries/84905/view/2782107/-1.html . The photo shows me 1 year old. I used Tim's texture fades on the blue cardstock and the gold shimmer paper.

The photo is of my grandparents approx. 1960. I used a MS border punch and a DA chipboard frame.

The photo was taken last week when DH surprised me with a long weekend trip to NYC for our anniversary. The chipboard fence is from Dusty Attic and the large flowers is made from Prima packaging with Tim's Tattered Floral die.

In the kit there is also a silver glittery Anna Griffin diecut that I cut up and colored with Stazon inks. The large flowers is made from metal and Tim's Tattered Florals die. I used texture fades on the gold shimmer paper and the green strip. The photo shows my DSS and his GF.

These were my last layouts for Swirlydoos as a DT member. My six months term is up, and now it is time for two other Swirlydoos members, Angelica http://angelicascrappenings.blogspot.com/ and Tina http://tina-mypaperpantry.blogspot.com/ , to inpire us with their creations. I truly enjoyed my time on the DT team and I want to thank Krissy for this opportunity and the other DT members for being part of such a friendly, talented and inspiring team.

Go check out www.swirlydoos.blogspot.com to read Krissy's message to all Swirlydoos subscribers and members, and please leave a comment to show her your support. This makes me so mad that people destroy other people's work just because they CAN!!! It really makes no sense at all! It also makes me sad, because we Swirlies lost our favorite hangout place. The place where we could show, share, care, support, learn , laugh, cry, create, celebrate, document all the events and persons that are important in our lives. It is always the first and last place I go to when I start or end my day. I love that it is a safe place to meet friends. Yes friends, because although I haven't met most Swirlies in person, it really feels as if we know each other very well.

Anyway, they might have destroyed our virtual world, but they can't take away our Swirly spirit. I'm sure that the new Swirlydoos website will be even better than before. In the meantime, stay tuned on the Swirlydoos blog, because all Swirly communications will go thru there, as well as the reveal of the July kit tomorrow!

This is my lift of Manda's "Grad" LO for the Round Robin challenge over @ Swirlydoos. I used a chipboard frame i.s.o. the die-cut paper. The lace and canvas flowers are (again) made with Tim's die (LOVE that die). The grungeboard letters of the title are covered with Tim's new tissue tape and than colored with tumbled glass distress ink. Some of the flowers and the cheese cloth behind the photo are sprayed with Glimmer Mist. The two chipboard frames are painted with acrylic paint and then distressed with gold and silver paint. What Else Could You Be?

This is my entry for the butterfly challenge over @ Swirlydoos. The entire LO is made of scraps. I colored the large butterfly with alcohol inks. The smaller butterflies are punched out of scraps of the Swirlydoos June kit. The hanging lamps is from Dusty Attic, which I painted with white acrylic paint and distressed with brown, gold and light blue paint.

Swirlydoos June Kit - Antebellum Beauty

I have been so busy this week that I'm really late posting the reveal of the Swirlydoos June kit - Antebellum Beauty. This month's kit is again uber gorgeous with the beautiful Ella Blue papers, stunning flowers and an abundance of the most amazing embellies. So much to choose from, which makes working with this kit pure pleasure.
This LO showcases a picture of DSD Stephanie. I colored the felt with glimmer mist and the swirls with alcohol ink. The flower is made of fabrics and lace with Tim's Tattered Florals die.

This is my take on the sketch, also provided with the kit. The flower is made of canvas and lace with Tim's Tattered Florals die.

This picture was taken last week when I was in The Netherlands for my Mom's 80th birthday. I colored the Dusty Attic gate with teal, brown, gold and silver paint.

I made this with scraps of Ella Blue from the main kit and 7G from the project kit.

This month's project kit is totally fun to make. It is the 7Gypsies Printers Tray plus the 7Gypsies Avignon papers. The embellies are from 7G, Tim and junk from my stash. The tiny houses are from Collections.

Recently I have totally fallen in love with the products of Collections. They have a gorgeous line of 6 x 6 papers and some pretty chipboard shapes. The little birdhouses as shown in my previous post are also from Collections. Last week I saw some super cute spools on Julie van Oosten's blog and I knew I just had to make them too. Buttons Tin

This is my entry for Lavona's May Altering Item Challenge over @ SB.com. This month's twist is to use at least 2 or 3 buttons. So I thought that this was a great opportunity to make something to store my buttons. I used an inexpensive lunch box tin, which I picked up at Michaels. I covered it with paper from the Prima Shabby Chic Collection and some lace and decorated it with a chipboard frame and and buttons from Jenni Bowlin, 7Gypsies and my stash. TFL

Swirly Girls Club Challenges May

These are my entries for this month's challenges over @ Swirlydoos. One is hosted by Tina: Distress and Layer. The challenge is to use at least 6 layers, all distressed and we had to make a rose. I used Tim's new Retro Grunge papers. The roses on the top right corner are made from metal and the rose at the bottom left corner is made of PP and UTEE. The flowers under the rose are PP covered grunge paper. Photo of DH and DS.

The other one is hosted by yours trully. The challenge is to make your own background paper from scraps. I keep my scraps by color in plastic envelopes and every now and then I'll take one of these envelopes and create a "new" piece of 12 x 12 paper. Just arrange your scraps and glue them on a piece of cardstock or "ugly" paper. The idea of the scalloped strip with the ribbon and roses is taken from one of my favorite artists Gabrielle Pollacco.

Frame

The basis for this frame is an inexpensive Ikea mirror, which I covered with one of the new papers from the Shabby Chic paper stack of Tim Holtz. Then I used some Viva Ferro paste in the upper left corner and stamped it with a script stamp. After drying I painted it with silver paint dabber and distressed it with the new distress ink color Pumice Stone. I think this is my new favorite color as it seems to go with everything. The lace stamps are from the Artistic Stamper and again I used the Pumice Stone distress ink. For the flourishes and the large flower I used TSS metal in the new color Bronzed God and he new Timster dies Tattered Florals and Elegant Flourishes. To give the metal some "body" I made a "sandwich" out of cardstock, adhesive sheet and metal before I ran it thru my Big Kick. The roses are made with the same paper as used for the background and then dipped in UTEE.

Swirlydoos May Kit - La Vie En Rose

The colors of this month's kit are very dramatic - red and black, and Krissy paired them with the most amazing flowers and other embellies. I had a blast working with them.

This month's papers are so beautiful by itself , so that is why I used one sheet to cover this box. I just love to decorate containers.

There is a little story behind the title of this mini album: when my BIL was visiting last month, he made some beautiful photo portraits of the children. Back in The Netherlands he e-mailed me some low resolution files, and made me promise that I wouldn't print them until he was back here with the HR files (mind you, he and my sis are here NOW! ). But of course, I couldn't wait that long, so I DID print them !!! Hence the title "Forbidden Pictures". I used Tim's new Tattered Florals and On the Edge dies.

Family - Swirlydoos Round Robin April

I made this LO for the round robin challenge over at Swirlydoos. This is the second lift of this LO. Mandy made the original, then it was lifted by Rae, and this is my take. I used one of Tim's new paperpacks - Shabby Chic. Photo of DH's grandparents (sitting); DH's father is the second from the right standing. Just love these old pictures.

Paper Tiles

Inspired by the art of Jenny Jones and Julie van Oosten I lifted their paper tiles idea and made my version of it. First I cut a piece of cardboard into 2 x 2 inch squares. Then I glued some scraps of paper on them and distressed them. I embellished the squares with some ideaology and other stuff from my stash. For the background I used a very inexpensive mirror from Ikea, which I painted with Gesso, paint dabber and distress ink. Thanks for looking

Daddy Cool

I made this LO for the grunge challenge over at Swirlydoos. This is a photo of my father in his young years, I guess even before he and my mom got married. I think he looks pretty cool, hence the title. I used the new TH Retro Grunge papers and his new Gadget Gears die. I cut the gears from the plastic packaging of the dies, embossed them and colored them with metallic alcohol ink and distress ink. Behind the photo I used one of the new TSS kabuka molds. TFL

Canvas Album

You know I love to try new things and materials. So last month I bought an album kit from Carol Wingert. I met her last year in Phoenix at Creative Escape, and she makes the most amazing mini albums. (there is a link to her blog on the right column of this page). This is an canvas album and most of the embellishments are from vintage fabrics, laces and ribbons. It all so gorgeous and I had a blast putting this album together and truly enjoyed working with fabrics and learning new techniques. I still need to do two more pages, but it requires a sewing machine to finish them. Hopefully DH gives me one for my B-day. I already dropped a hint or two (LOL).

I didn't fill the album with photos yet, because it is all so pretty, and I don't want to spoil it with my photos. Just love to touch it and feel all the different textures. TFL

Swirlydoos April kit - Park Avenue - Reveal!!!

I'm late posting the Swirlydoos Park Avenue projects I did this month, but here they are.

You just gotta love all the yummie goodies in this kit. I used lots of Shiummerz paint on this LO. So much fun to play with! Photo of my nephew's girlfriend Emma.

Here I used the beautiful Webster Pages vellum paper as the background. I also made the little roses of vellum paper. Photo of the daughter of my friends picking flowers in the field.

This LO is based on Beggahuna's sketch provided with the kit. The photo is of my stepson and his girlfriend.

This is a photo of my aunt and uncle. I used a metal leaf which I colored with alcohol ink, and some bronze flowers and leaves which I antiqued with acrylic paint.

Picture of Nike and me on my wedding day. The roses are handmade and the oval in the right bottom corner is a fragment with metal behind it.

This is an absolute copy job. I saw this on the Websters website. It is a design of Toni Crane. But it so happened that I just had bought the little suitcase and had the exact same papers from the kit, so I just HAD to make it. Too cute!!!

More Playtime

Just wanted to share a few things that I've done the past few days.

My first attempt to work with beeswax. It wasn't as easy as it looked on Suze Weinberg's tutorial. I'm not entirely happy with the result and I don't know if it is finished, or not. Maybe I have to put more stuff on it. That is one of the nice things of working with wax. It is very forgiving. You can always melt it and add, move, and/or remove stuff. Will keep you posted.

This book/box is altered with with stuff from my stash and some left-overs from the Swirlydoos Butterfly whispers kit. I cut some flowers from lace and tule.

Swirly Girls Club Challenges

Did you know we run some fantastic challenges @ Swirlydoos???? Check out their forum and play along!

This is my entry for Manda's challenge for March for the Swirly Girls Club. For this challenge we had to show our dying skillz. For the backgound paper I masked, stamped, inked, misted, painted. I glued metal on two corners and blended that into the paper with molding paste. On all the elements on this LO is paint or ink or both, except for the photo. For the title I used Marion Smith's chipboard technique.

Then for Peggy's challenge we had to use one of Robin's (loves2create) sketches and turn it 90 degrees, use 3 fllowers, 2 butterflies, 1 ribbon, and 50% Swirlydoos stuff. I used Robin's sketch #127.

Play Time!

After all the LO's done and with the new stuff hitting the stores it was time for a little play time. I love to make tags or little 5 x 7 panels to try new products or techniques.

A mini canvas with the new distress inks, glimmer mist, perfect pearls, grungeboard and grunge paper, metal, stamps, masks...

Some tags with metal, molding paste, embossing folders, stamps, grunge paper, paint, ink, perfect pearls..... ohhh, the fun I'm having....

And I played with metal and some of the new TSS molds. The right panel is a lift from Linda Brown. I saw it on her blog and I had all this stuff, so I just had to make it. So cool. I was the first time I used the alcohol ink fillable pen. I only have one, but now of course I want more LOL

Swirlydoos March kit - Butterfly Whispers - Reveal!!!

YAY!!! It is reveal day of the gorgeous new Swirlydoos March kit - Butterfly Whispers!!!! It is jampacked with the newest Prima goodies!! What a joy to work with. Here are my contributions:

This LO is based on the amazing Beggahuna sketch, also provided in the kit.

Picture of Nike as a teen. I put some gold acrylic paint on burgundy velvet paper, used some of the gold paper from the project kit and added some other golden thingies from my stash.

Wedding day picture of my mom and dad. The gorgeous papers and embellies are just perfect for wedding pictures.

Here is another one. It is difficult to see, but I used brown velvet paper as the background. The picture was not taken in Paris, but at the Universal Studios.

Another picture taken at Universal Studios. I used GabrielleP's ruffled edge technique.

Picture of my nephew and his girlfriend. The brown background paper is from the project kit, the mesh is from a previous kit and the mesh roses (Prima) are from my stash. The heart I made from embossed pink metal.

This is done with the amazing project/technique kit of this month. The mosaic frame is so much fun to make!

I still have papers and embellies left over for one or two more LO's, cards or other projects. Will post these when ready.

New TSS Molds!!!

Yesterday the new TSS molds came in. They are soooo cool!!! Just had to play with them. I also made my own background paper. The photo is of my dad. He passed away 25 years ago, but I still miss him.

For the background paper I masked, inked, stamped and misted a piece of white cardstock. Then I cut a piece of 4.5" x 8" aluminum and embossed it with the new Kabuka #7 and then colored it with alcohol ink and paint dabber. For the horizontal strip I cut a piece of 2" x 12" aluminum and embossed it with the new Big Daddy Mold #7, painted and sanded it. The little rectangular piece is done with Kabuka #8 and alcohol ink. I embellished the LO with lots of T!m goodies and old watch parts.

"Prima" Bottles

Last week I saw these gorgeous decorated bottles at the Prima booth at CHA. I just had to try that too. Of course I didn't have the new Prima blingies and flowers yet, but with some "old" stuff it turned out just as pretty. You can use just any bottle you have (The pink one with the crown I bought at M's, the blue one I had in my cupboard for age, and the white one is an empty olive oil bottle). I painted these first with paint dabber (I didn't paint the pink bottle), then put on some bling, flowers and lace on it, and presto! Ready in less than half an hour!

17 Camels

A few years ago I was working in the Middle East. One weekend DH came to visit me and we drove to a camel market in Al Ain. The merchant offered DH 17 camels to trade for me LOL. Don't know if that was a good deal, or not, but luckily for me DH doesn't like animals, so he kept me. I did some masking, stamping and misting on this layout. TFL

Sister Love

My sister and me on her wedding day. The LO is based on Suepup's sketch 012520 (link: http://www.scrapbook.com/galleries/243205/view/2564135.html). Thanks Char for the inspiration! The hearts were painted with crackle paint, then inked with distress ink and then some distress stickles. When it was finished I felt that it was still to bold on the LO, so I glued some ribbon on the big heart and wrapped some pearled wire around the smaller heart. TFL

February "From Venice, with Love" kits revealed @ Swirlydoos!

Wohoo, my first month as a Swirly designer!!! And I'm so lucky,because this must be one of the bestest kits to date!!! The papers are gorgeous. Right up my alley, the flowers are to die for, and the embelliues and stamps - sooo cool! And then the project kit with the TSS metal. The possibilities with these kits are endless. Thanks Krissy, for not choosing the traditional red and pink Valentine papers. What I love about the papers of this kit is that you can use them for any theme or event. So I'm starting off with the sketch LO. Every month the very talented Beggahuna designs a sketch especially for Swirlydoos. Here is my take:

The picture is of my DSS and his GF. They are so cute together. I first painted the heart with distress crackle paint, then inked it with distress ink and then covered it with distress stickles. Don't you just love the little birdie stamp and the precious butterflies? The flourish is cut with my Cricut.

The second LO is a photo my BIL took of the children of one of his collegues. Isn't that just the cutest picture ever? I had to scrap it. I used a MS border punch and the swirls are cut with my Sizzix.

This picture of Nike was taken when she just met her future husband-to-be. I embossed two metal strips which I decorated with pearls. The flourish is made with my Cricut.

Another picture of Nike, taken last year. I inked the ribbon with distress ink.

This is one of the last pictures taken of my grandma. She was 98 years old when she passed away. I LOVE the gorgeous butterfly frame which was included in the Embellishment Add-on Kit. I colored it with Glimmer Mist and decorated it with liquid pearls. The tule butterfly is from the January kit.

I used this patchwork design already several times, but it is such a great way to use your scraps. And of course I wanted to use every last bit of paper of this kit. The photo is my BIL and his niece. She totally adores him and wants to be just like him LOL. The die-cut is made with my QK Revolution. The title and bird are made from TSS metal, the metal rose is made of TH foliage. The metal corners are TH too.

The last LO I made for the Swirly Girls Club February Challenge that Robin is hosting on the Swirlydoos website. It is open to everybody, so come over and play along! The challenge is to have negative space and to use 4 photo's. I used the last bits and pieces of paper of this kit, embossed a metal heart and gave it grungeboard wings, which I inked, stamped and painted.

Lots to tell ya

It has been a while since I posted on the blog. But that doesn't mean that I haven't been busy.

For starters: I was asked to be a Swirlydoos designer!!!!! Wohoo, how exciting is that!! Starting with their February kit you can see my work on their website on reveal day, which is the last day of every month. I will also post the layouts here on my blog.

Then, I had the opportunity to visit the winter CHA in Anaheim!!! So awesome! I saw so many amazingly gorgeous scrappy goodies and met so many nice people. People that I only knew from the web. Cool!! Here is a picture of part of the Swirlydoos design team: Robin (Robinzberdz), Krissy (Rodeeogrl, and our fearless leader @ Swirlydoos), Irene (Scrapperlicious) and me.

And then, when I came back from CHA, I saw that Jolanda has given me this blog award.

I cleaned out my scrap room and came across my old stash of papers. So here are two layouts made of older papers and scraps.

Isn't she lovely? This is Nike 1 week old. Usually I'm not such a pink scrapper, but after all the Christmas and winter layouts I felt like something light and girly. I used some of my old stash papers and scraps. The heart is made from a paper heart on which I glued lots of flowers. Sort of an early Valentines heart.

I made this for the Blooming Butterfly challenge at SB.com. The background paper is 7Gypsies and the tags are made from K&C paper. The chipboard swirl is from A2Z Scraplets, and I painted it with pearl paint dabber and then stamped it. The gingham flowers are from Maya Road. The pink flowers are probably Prima, but I'm not sure. The swirl on the right is made with Liquid Pearls on acetate. The birds, flowers and wing are made from black TSS metal, die-cut with my Sizzix, embossed and sanded. TFL

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a safe and happy new year. Mine was quite and peaceful. But honestly, Im happy that the holidays are over and that everything will be back to normal after today. As much as I LOVE the holidays, I always feel good about making a fresh start in the New year. Today I wanted to share with you two more layouts I made with the Swirlydoos January kit. Winter Layouts

No white Christmas here in Houston, but it is cold! The Swirlydoos January kit arrived just before Christmas, jampacked with all kinds of gorgeous winter goodies! Here are my first two layouts made with this kit.

This LO is based on Beggahuna's sketch, also provided in the kit. Picture of me when I was still a student. Me and my boyfriend rented a small recreational cottage in the northern part of The Netherlands, close to where my sister is living now. Then this snow blizzard came and we were isolated from the rest of the world for a few days. Some big bulldozer shovels from the local forrest rangers had to rescue us.

I embossed the vertical striped with embossing tinsel and snowed the title with white ink and distress stickles.

DH and his brothers playing in the snow back in 1958. This LO is made with the gorgeous Bo Bunny papers of the Swirlydoos January main kit and the Glimmer chips of the Technique Add-on kit. They are just perfect together, so I didn't have to do much to make it look pretty! I misted the chips with Glimmer mist and then embossed some pieces with embossing tinsel (also included in the technique add-on kit).

More Metal

It is so much fun to play with my new tools, molds and metal that I went a bit overboard. I metalized all the packaging tins that I could never throw away, and now they came in handy. The mini suitcases are from Maya Road chipboard shapes, the bigger rectangular ones are from Quickutz and the round one is from the Prima flowers. They are not perfect, but they are great little projects to practice my metal embossing skills.

Art Shadow Box

This is a lift of a project that Tim H and Sheryl D did at Ten Seconds Studio back in June. Inside the shadow box are 5 mini canvasses that I covered with old book and music paper and then inked with distress ink and embelished with idea-ology trinkets and vintage findings. The outside of the frame is decorated with embossed metal strips (see detailed photo's). TFL

My first canvas

In the Swirlydoos add-on kit of this month was an 8 x 8 canvas. At first I was a bit puzzled as to what to do with it, because I never worked on a canvas before, but there is always a first time.

This is what I did:
- Glue torn sheet music, decorative and old book paper with gel medium onto the canvas
- cover with a thin wash of gesso
- layer 1: paint some gesso on a piece of paper bag, then wrinkled it
- layer 2: a piece of an old napkin
- adhere photo, and embellish
- the metallic rose is made from grunge paper covered with aluminum repair tape from the hardware store and then colored with alcohol ink.

On the picture are my parents in law on their wedding day in 1946.

The title of this LO is a Dutch thing. Back in the seventies there was this group of girl singers called "Luv" and they had a mega hit whereby the chorus was tralala, and they always did this striking pose , and that is what this picture reminded us of. Anyhow, this is us again at the first formal night onboard the cruise ship. All the papers are 7 Gypsies from the Swirlydoos November add-on kit. I inked the doily with several colors distress ink, and sprayed the lace with Glimmer Mist. The flowers are made with my Sizzix. TFL

The Good Life

After an inspiring class of Wendy Vecchi it was good to relax a bit on our stateroom balcony. We received a free bottle of champagne (yeah, our favorite drink!!!) because the ship had to make a detour to avoid tropical storm Patricia and we had to stay at sea for one more day (more scrapping time!!!). For this LO I used all scraps, except for the background paper (Websters Pages). I colored the bling with alcohol ink, the flowers are from Prima and the awesome stamps are, of course, Tim's. OK, so this is Nike and me in a photoshoot with a .... TIGER!!!! When we were in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico there was this fund raiser for a wildlife preserve, and of course Nike - animal lover as she is - insisted that our picture was taken with the tiger. There were 2 tigers - a cute little baby and a bigger one. Guess which one Nike picked.... So, what to do as a big sis??? The LO is a lift from IngridG's LO "Brighton" (link: http://www.scrapbook.com/gallery/image/layout/2389745.html). At least that is how it was intended and how it started. But you know me, I can't stand empty white space on my LO, so I changed the background paper for a patterned paper. But then Ingrid has these 3 super cute seaguls on her LO, so I did 3 butterflies, and another 3, and another, well I guess I went a bit overboard with that. But now it looks as if the tiger is looking at the butterflies, and I thought that was cute too. TFL

This is my sister, Nike, at the mega workshop of Wendy Vecchi during the last day of our Artful Voyage cruise. We were making a very cool inspiration board with a lot of grunge paper flowers. The LO is based on a sketch of Beggahuna. The title is, of course, Wendy's slogan. I used a piece of cardboard, some chipboard and grungeboard alpha's, metal tape, alcohol ink and a sanding block. This is a new technique for me that I've never used before on my LO's. I'm submitting this LO for the Let's get Shabby Challenge No. 5. TFL and have a great week!

Bird Plaques

Here is another attempt of mine to do someting other than scrapbook pages. I admit, I totally copied it. I was telling in an earlier post that I am exploring new techniques and I found this metal bird plaque in the Trends & Trinkets booklet of Design Originals. The booklet contains a lot inspiring ideas. Sooo cool!!! So much fun to make something totally different with stuff I had already in my stash. I didn't have to buy anything for it!!!! I even had the metal tape. Can't remember how I got it; it must have been in a kit, or something. But.... I had only enough to make one plaque. Therefore I adjusted the design to a paper project so I could make another one.

Treasure Box

This is a box I made during the cruise. To keep up busy during our day off (that means: no workshops that day LOL) we received a naked card board box that we could decorate. I covered it with 7G papers and gaffer tape and glued some torn old book and music papers on it and used some TH stamps. Then I covered the top with Rock Candy distress crackle paint. The chipboard alpha's are from Maya Road and painted with black paint dabber and covered with copper distress stickles. The knob is from 7G and the metal hanging embelishment is another project we did in one of Tim's classes.

A New World!!!

This shadow box we made during one of Tim's workshops during the Mexico artful voyage sparked my interest for mixed media projects. Ever since I'm back from the cruise I'm browsing the internet to learn more of these exciting techniques, tools and materials. It opens up a whole new world for me!!! Up to now, I only did 2-D scrapbooking, but now I discover that there are so much more possibilities to CREATE and to use all of the scrappy stuff I have hoarded over time!! For those of you who have already travelled this road it is probably nothing new, but I'm really excited about the transition from 2-D to 3-D projects. Of course this doesn't mean that I won't do scrapbook pages anymore. I love to do that too. But every now and then I will try something else. In my next post I'll show you my first steps into this (for me) new discovery.

Back home!

Back home!!!! But what an awesome voyage this was!!! Everything, the ship, the food, the ports of call, but most of all the workshops of TIM and WENDY were just amazing, incredible, fun, inspiring, creative, and so well organized.! Everything was taken care off. We didn't have to bring any tools or supplies of our own. And you won't believe the amount of goodies we got. Tim already warned us to bring an extra suitcase and we sure needed that LOL! Separate from the two classrooms there was a studio just for us where we could scrap 24/7, and Mario's market place, were we could satisfy all of our scrappy shopping needs. The projects we made ware so much fun to do. I did not yet complete them all, but below is Tim's grungeboard mini album full of 7Gypsies and Idea-ology goodies. Still have to include my pictures, but want to share it now anyway.

Artful Voyage

Wohoo, I'm so excited!! Next week I'll be going on on a week long scrapbook cuise, the Mexico Artful Voyage with Tim Holtz and Wendi Vecchi!!!! How fun is THAT!!! I'm so looking forward to their workshops! I'll be travelling with my sister. It is the first time that we will be going on a vacation together, just the two of us. Today she is flying from the Netherlands to Houston, and she'll be arriving late tonight. Then tomorrow we'll have a quite day, so she can adjust to the time difference and with only some minor preparations to do, like going to the hair dresser, checking if we packed the right clothes and of course the our scrappy stuff. LOL On saturday we'll be flying to LA where we booked a pre-night stay in a hotel, where we will probably meet already a lot of the other artful voyagers. Then on sunday we can finally board "our" ship and the adventure can begin!!!

Some of our fellow voyagers organized an ATC swap. That sounds really fun, but there are 160 of us, so it is a huge undertaking! And I have never done ATC's before. And then some of the ladies posted some sneak peeks of their ATC's and that was so overwhelming, that it discouraged me to even try. But later I read that there were a lot of other ladies like me that never done ATC's, and I thought "why not make something simple", so I can at least participate in all the fun. So that is what I did. I made some really simple monogram cards which I painted, stamped and embellished. One of the cards I embellished a bit more and made it into a name tage with a necklace that I can wear during our trip. Below are some pictures of the front and back of the card with the necklace.

This weekend finally the new Swirlydoos kit "Autumn Splendor" arrived at my door step!!! I had to wait for it, because some stuff was held in customs, but, WOW, it was worth the wait. This LO is made with the new main kit, except for the music paper and the bling. They are from my stash. The alpha's are from the september kit and are colored with Smooch.

White with 1 October Challenge

This is what I came up with as my first entry as a CT member:

I created my own background paper again.

1) You can use a store bought mist, or make your own mist as follows. Take an empty Mini Mister, dip the tip of a craft stick into the Perfect Pearls (I used Pewter), drop the PP into the Mini Mister and add a drop full of distress ink re-inker (I used Weathered Wood) and fill up with water to approx, 1/2 inch from the top. Shake to mix.

2) Arrange your selection of Glimmer Screens and/or masks on the white cardstock and mist. Heat set to dry.

3) Using the same color ink as for the mist, stamp random images to dress up your paper.

4) Distress and ink the edges

5) Then for the LO cut 3 mats for the photo: duck egg blue shimmer 4.5" x 6.5", white 6" x 8", duck egg blue 6.5" x 8.5".

6) Distress the edges. Run the piece of white cardstock thru an embossing folder.

7) Cut a piece of white cardstock 2" x 12". Punch and ink the borders. Stamp in the middle, if desired.

8) Arrange the paper pieces and photo as shown, or create your own LO and dress up with embellies.

This is a picture of the daughter of my brother-in-law from an earlier marriage. What does that make me? Her step aunt??? LOL I'm still trying to make a dent in my stash, so this LO is totally made of scraps, except for the white background cardstock. The borders are rub-ons, which I already have forever.

Let's Get Shabby Challenge #4

Here is my take on the challenge of the Let's Get Shabby. This month's challenge is to use someting vintage, either photo or embellies. These are pictures of my parent's wedding in 1953. This weekend I got the new Tim Holtz filmstrip ribbon, so I just HAD to use it (LOL)! The heart with the flower is a little project from Wendi Vecchi's new book "Make Art, Studio 490 Style". Today I was inspired by my sister, Nike, who posted a LO made of "forgotten" papers. You kwim, those papers that you have in your stash forever, and that you always skip because there are newer, more exciting papers to use. So I made this LO with papers that are at least two years old. The photo is of my nephew, his girlfriend and me made this summer. I stamped the background paper with Studio 490 stamps, and I doodled some faux stitching and stickle swirls. TFL Bonnie

Serious Business

The basis for this LO is a sketch from Beggahuna (link: http://www.scrapbook.com/galleries/101207/view/2353299/-1/0/1.html), which is included in the Swirlydoos Bejeweled kit. The flourish is cut from white cardstock and then colored with Glimmer Mist, which I didn't spray this time, but applied with a fine brush. The butterfly is made from grunge paper and TH stuff according instructions in Wendy Vecchi's book "Make Art, Studio 490 Style". The flowers are from Prima. The picture is me at the age of four.

Did you know I can also do a simple page? Although, I must admit, that is a challenge by itself. I sometimes have the feeling that if my LO isn't full of layers, embellies and techniques, it isn't worthy of uploading and showing. But hey ... here it is. Just a nice memory of my first visit to Arizona. I did some masking and stitching and the cactus is hand cut from a scrap of grungeboard. TFL and have a great weekend! Bonnie

The love for crafting is of all times. This picture of my MIL's sewing machine must be at least 40 years old, maybe even older. I made this LO for the september challenge of Let's get Shabby - white and/or cream with a touch of another color.
These are the steps:
1) Use a piece of white cardstock as a basis
2) Cut a piece of cream paper in three and tear the edges
3) Glue on cream paper on white cardstoch and stitch together with big cross stitches
4) For the layers I arranged a doily, a piece of newspaper. magic mesh and a crochet piece
5) Paint the clock and alpha's with Rock Candy Distress Paint and let dry
6) When dry, rub some Old Paper distress ink in the cracks
7) Embellish with flowers, ribons, and other yummy goodies
That's it!

The challenge for this LO is white, pink and no flowers. The picture is of DN's girlfriend taken this summer. When I completely finished the LO, I noticed that she has a flower in her hair. Let's hope I can still enter the challenge. (LOL)
This is how I did it:
1) The transparancy with the words I had in my stash forever; don't know the brand
2) The tag is embossed with a Cuttlebug embossing folder and then inked with Worn Lipstick Distress Ink
3) The white paper is stamped with a Studio490 stamp and Worn Lipstick Distress Ink
4) The chipboard letters are inked with Worn Lipstick, then stamped with white pigment ink and then covered with Rock Candy distress stickles
5) The grungeboard crown is painted with metallic pearl paint dabber
6) The bling is from ZVA
7) Finish with some cross stitches here and there and a ribbon on the right side

Today I wanted to scrap with a color I hardly ever use, hence the yellow. I stamped my own background papers again with the same technique as my previous LO, but different stamps and color. I will show below how they looked like before I scrapped them. I embellished with a doily, some Prima flowers, bling, a "Catz" heart and the flourished and title are cut with my Cricut. I'm not even gonna tell you who is on the picture (LOL). ;D

Summer Love

A picture of DSS and girlfriend. They make such a cute couple and gave me a lot of pictures to scrap. The LO is based on an amazing sketch from Scrapperlicious. I made the background paper from scratch: white cardstock, ink, masks and a stamp. Pretty cool, huh???

Here is how I made the background paper.

1) I used a piece of white cardstock as the base
2) Using white pigment ink stamp the fern as shown. You won't really see it now, but it will work as a resist once you apply color
3) Heat set to dry
4) Place the mask(s) as desired and spray with Glimmer Mist (I used Apple Red)
5) Dab with paper towel to remove excess Mist and heat set to dry
6) Ink lightly the entire background using Old Paper Distress Ink, add enough ink to make the ferns pop
7) Using Distress Ink (I used Fired Brick) stamp the fern again
8) Ink the edges with your favorite brown ink

That's it!! Have fun!

Last month I went to Arizona to the Creative Escape weekend. This was such an inspiring event with some of the most talented scrapbook teachers. The main reason I went there was because Tim Holtz was teaching there. He is my idol!!! His work is so inspiring! But one of the surprises for me were Paula Cheney and Deb Crouse of 7Gypsies. Wow these girls are talented; their trunkshow was amazing and their class project is one of the few I have actually displayed in my scraproom and is the only one that I showed on my SB.com gallery. So now I am totally into 7Gypsies!!! The 7G papers and embellies are so yummie, but I could not find them at my LSS. Luckily HL had some mini album covers, ephemera and the Binderie punch. So I now could satisfy my new obsession and make a mini album, unfortunately not with their papers, but heavily inspired by 7G. Thanks for taking a peek! Bonnie

My first post

For months now I'm thinking of starting a blog, but didn't know how and when to start. Do I wait for the New Year, or start with a special event in my life, or what? So today I thought "let's just start". Try to create a post and take it from there.

This is a lift from a canvas that Carol Wingert showed on her trunkshow during the Creative Escape weekend last month. Another inspiration during that weekend were Paula Cheney and Deb Crouse of 7Gypsies. Their slogan is "She knew that with right amount of junk she could create a masterpiece". I can so relate to that. This LO is made of scraps, family pictures and junk and was so much fun to make. It showcases all the persons that are dear to me and is the perfect representation of the title of this blog. Thanks for stopping by and enjoy your week! Bonnie
